The Cairn
McLemore’s exquisite six-hole short course
-
Following the opening of McLemore’s renowned Highlands Course, Bill Bergin designed The Cairn, a spectacular par three course set above McLemore’s award-winning 18th hole. The course was named The Cairn—a Gaelic word for the tall mound of stones stacked in the middle of the venue.
-
The design solution aimed to reflect the traditional spirit of the Gaelic word “cairn” rather than a literal representation. The result implements a Celtic knot motif, modified into the shape of the letter “C.” The result provides a flexible design that allows clean line work to dominate while offering a contemporary and abstract interpretation when the interior negative spaces are filled in.
-
In order to draw attention to the smaller course as a destination among the primary amenities of the resort, tall vertical flags are placed along the perimeter of the course. This adds a sense of importance to location, even giving it a regal feel.
