"Strategy is not a deck. It is the sentence that decides which logo you keep and which one you kill, which name clears the room and which one saves the next ten years."
IV Whitman, ESQUE
Overview
Brand strategy is the foundation every ESQUE identity is built on. It answers the questions no logo can answer on its own: who is this for, what space are we claiming, how is this brand different from the four competitors the buyer is also considering, and what promise has to be true in every email, every sign, every conversation a staff member has with a guest.
How we work
Listen. We start with in-person and remote conversations with the founder, the executive team, the people who actually touch the product, and a sample of customers or members. The strategy has to come from the business, not from a template.
Audit. We review the competitive landscape, the category's conventions, the client's current materials, and the places the brand is being encountered in the wild. We look for the open space and the things the competition cannot credibly claim.
Position and architect. We write a short, defensible positioning, map any brand architecture decisions for sub-brands, amenity brands, or product lines, and define the audience segments in plain language.
Message. We develop the core messaging hierarchy (brand idea, proof points, tone of voice) and the way the brand should sound on homepage, sales collateral, reservations email, and social.
Hand off. We deliver a written strategic platform built to brief the identity work that follows, whether ESQUE does it or you hand it to an in-house team or a separate partner.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is brand strategy?
Brand strategy is the decision-making framework that sits behind every expression of a brand. It names the audience, sets the positioning against competitors, defines the brand architecture, establishes the messaging, and decides the tone of voice. Brand strategy is what a brand identity is expressing. Without it, identity work is decoration.
What is brand positioning?
Brand positioning is a short, defensible statement of the space a brand is claiming in the market. It is the answer to "for whom, for what, and unlike whom." A good positioning statement is specific enough that the competition cannot credibly say the same thing, and broad enough that the brand can grow into it for a decade.
Who leads brand strategy at ESQUE?
Brand strategy at ESQUE is led by founder IV Whitman. Every engagement starts with strategy work directly with IV, either one-on-one with the founder or CEO, or in workshop format with the leadership team. Strategy is not handed off to a separate department. It is the foundation the identity is built on, and it is designed and run by the person who will also shape the visual system.
How long does a brand strategy engagement take?
A focused brand strategy engagement typically runs four to eight weeks. It includes listening sessions, competitive audit, audience work, positioning, messaging, and a written strategic platform that becomes the brief for the identity work that follows. For larger brand architecture projects with multiple sub-brands, the strategy phase can run ten to twelve weeks.
Do you take brand strategy engagements without identity design?
Yes. ESQUE takes standalone brand strategy engagements for clients who already have an identity partner, an in-house design team, or who simply need the strategic foundation before they decide what to do with the visuals. The written platform is designed to brief any downstream partner, not just ESQUE.
